The “Great Girl” Glow-Up

Raquel Welch knew how to draw attention...

April 4, 2024

The actress and style icon set the world ablaze in the mid-1960s and into the 1970s with striking roles in “One Million Years B.C.” and “The Three Musketeers,” and it was Welch’s aura and presence that catapulted her into a new realm of sex symbols.

As was all the rage in the 1980s, Welch’s stunning pinup girl looks and big hair made her easily identifiable in any arena, and the actress – who died in February 2023 at age 82 – capitalized on her fame while using her gifted beauty to break barriers.

In 1985, Welch released her book,“The Raquel Welch Total Beauty and Fitness Program,” which focused on the principles of hatha-yoga rather than aerobics.

Just a year earlier,American artist Clayton Lafevre (American, 20th Century) – inspired by Welch’s era-defining characteristics – created a colorful portrait depicting her donning blue workout attire in the style many had come to identify with Welch in large part due to images seen in her book and 90-minute workout video.

A portrait by American artist Clayton LaFevre (American, 20th century), depicting Raquel Welch wearing blue workout attire, similar in style to images of Welch seen in her 1985 book The Raquel Welch Total Beauty and Fitness Program, signed and dated "Clayton 84" in the lower left and framed in an acrylic frame.

Lafevre’s gradient piece, personally signed and dated "Clayton 84" in the lower left and framed in an acrylic frame, is now up for sale in our “Bombshell: The Raquel Welch Collection”auction.
