Julien's Auctions, the Auction House to the Stars, proudly presents the auction of Harold Lloyd’s The Rogues Gallery Autograph Collection, the most extensive and unique autograph collection amassed by the silent film star Harold Lloyd himself comprising of the most significant figures of Hollywood's "Golden Age" inscribed to Lloyd.
In the 1930’s, Harold Lloyd amassed the collection by writing to the biggest public figures and movie stars and asking them to mail back an inscribed photo for what would become The Rogues Gallery, the most important autograph collection of its era. The auction is to be held at the Julien's Auctions Los Angeles gallery on September 23, 2016.
The collection offers nearly two hundred personally inscribed photos from Hollywood's most important stars including leading ladies and men from the Golden Era including Marlene Dietrich, Clarke Gable, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, John Barrymore, Jack Benny, Clara Bow, Bob Hope, Cecil B. DeMille, Errol Flynn, Boris Karloff and many more. In addition to the film stars, the collection includes autographed photos from other notable public figures including Babe Ruth, Calvin Coolidge, Thomas Edison, Amelia Earhart, and Helen Keller.
Harold Lloyd’s acting career rose to prominence during the silent film era and spanned 34 years of active filmmaking, over 200 comedies and one 1928 Academy Award nomination. During his long and illustrious career, Harold Lloyd had dealings with the most famous actors and public figures of the time and was in a unique position to be able to put together The Rogues Gallery. Lloyd delighted in showing off his autograph collection to visitors in his famed Greenacres residence. The collection serves as a time capsule of the popular personalities of the late 1920s and 1930s which are for the first time being publicly offered at auction.
