This photograph of the star was taken by journalist Larry Grobel, who visited Brando for a week to conduct an in-depth interview for Playboy Magazine. The interview was a great success for both men, and would eventually form the basis of Grobel's book, Conversations with Marlon Brando, first published in 1991.

Grobel writes, “There was no photographer on Brando’s Tahitian island when I was there to interview him for the 25th Anniversary issue of Playboy magazine in 1978. There were very few people on the island, besides the cook, bartender, and workers. I knew I’d need to take photos of Marlon but didn’t broach the subject until the last of my ten days with him. He let me take these photos of him, and of the hut where he lived when he was at Tetiaroa. This is the first time I’ve offered these photos, one of which I put on the most recent cover of Conversations with Brando.  It was a special time, in an enchanted place, far from the noise of civilization. It certainly gave a boost to my career, as most of the actors I would interview after this one appeared agreed to talk to me because I had been with Brando.”
