John Lennon Painting from

Lennon and Ono with Painting

Lot #230

John Lennon Painting from "Imagine"

An original watercolor painting featuring Indian spiritual figures owned by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. This painting can prominently be seen in the surreal Lennon/Ono film "Imagine" (Joko, 1973). An inscription and signature by rock and roll photographer Bob Gruen on the verso reads in full: "This Indian watercolor of a spiritual figure surrounded by musicians was owned by John Lennon Yoko Ono and was above their piano in the their rehearsal space at the Hit Factory located at West 48th Street in New York City during the recording of the Double Fantasy album. A photograph of John Lennon and Yoko Ono seated at the piano with this painting with them appears in my book "Sometime In New York City" on page 21/dated May 31, 1996/New York, New York." Also present are images of John and Yoko with the painting visible in the background. Also present is facsimile copy of a letter of authenticity. Painting was later gifted from Lennon to close friend Richard Ross; the owner of the famed New York club and restaurant, Home.
